Contemporary jewelry examines patterns of social values, as well as the impact of politics and activism on collective aesthetics. Goethe-Institut Athen presents SMCK ON REEL / Three Myths for Athens from 8 to 30 May 2026.
The opening event on Friday 8 May at Goethe Institut's Concert Hall (Saal) includes videos on jewelry and applied arts, as well as introductory talks by Dimitris Skourogiannis, Voula Karapantzaki, Anastasia Panagakos.
Goethe Institut will screen the videos (loop) daily until 30 May.
Artists and designers from Europe, USA, Asia and Oceania, as well as from war torn Ukraine and the Middle East, use the medium video to talk about love, intimacy, climate change, war, peace, memory, identity, self determination.
The featured jewelry, textile and objects create a collective narrative that echoes timeless Athens. Struggle - Justice - Harmony, fundamental ideas of the Greek polis, are represented through the myths of Orestes, Theseus, Oedipus.

Eight videos are nominated for the SMCK ON REEL Video Award. Voting for the best video was possible from 8–30 May 2026.
The winner of SMCK ON REEL Athens Audience Award is Q Hisashi Shibata for his video portrait of artist, curator, and gallerist Paul Derrez. Congratulations!
"PAUL DERREZ: A True Inspiration" (Netherlands, 2025) introduces the viewer into the private sphere and thoughts of a living contemporary jewelry legend. The video portrait also serves as a testimony for future generations who wish to explore the history of contemporary jewelry, and learn from the challenges faced by the artists.

Artist portrait videos make the audience acquainted with the artist’s work, environment, cultural background and philosophy. They are a digital trace of the artist’s itinerary that adds depth and significance to the artist’s career and progress, especially when seen from a future perspective – ten, twenty or thirty years from now.
SMCK ON REEL Audience Award winner Q Hisashi Shibata will enjoy a four-day residency and intensive educational program in Athens, Greece.
The two previous SMCK ON REEL Audience Awards were given also to artist portraits, namely: "The Urgent Need to Keep Creating" by Roberto & Victoria (Spain, 2026) and Ji Young Kim (Korea, 2025). The audience preference speaks volumes about the importance of the genre for jewelry lovers, artists, educators, gallerists and customers.
Awards should benefit the awardees, enrich their knowledge of the matter and offer them inspiration. Supermarket-style discount policies have no place in the luxury field of jewelry art.
SMCK Magazine produces, screens and promotes artist portrait videos by conducting professional and highly customized interviews with artists, and by shooting and editing the video material and content to create substantial, eloquent and unforgettable features.
