A KALEIDOSCOPE OF MYTHOLOGY, MEMORY, AND THE UNCONSCIOUS

JEWELRY · TEXTILE · OBJECT · COLLAGE · HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHY
AVGO AYGO ART SPACE · LEONIDIO GREECE

22+23 AUGUST 2026

Myths encapsulate the human experience, transmitting multi-layered messages through symbols, enigmas, and often non-linear or even contradictory narratives. Once all elements are added up, myths make sense, and their wisdom leads to a better understanding of the rules of existence.

A similar structure can be found in other cultural expressions of the laws ruling human life, such as fairy tales, Tarot cards, or the Dada and Surrealist movements. It is no coincidence that myths labeled the theories of the pioneering explorers of the unconscious and offered an explanation for the perpetual phenomena dominating the human psyche. Myths, fairy tales, Tarot cards, and modern art movements share a deeper bond: they are fragments of human experience, dreams, and thoughts, outlining the memory of what is lost or forgotten over time.

The exhibition FRAGMENTS features twenty-seven international artists examining how myths resonate with contemporary aspirations and agonies. The artists employ the mediums of jewelry, objects, sculpture, textiles, photography, digital media, collages, or assemblage to give a new twist to archaic testimonies and open new channels for their own imaginary narratives.

FRAGMENTS also pays tribute to its host town, presenting the history of Leonidio and its pioneering merchant class through a visual labyrinth. This labyrinth is composed by historical photographs taken between 1880 and 1970 in reputable photographers’ studios in Greece, Egypt, the Ottoman Empire, and the USA, enriched by amateur shots taken with pocket cameras to commemorate community events.

FRAGMENTS is the second part of the exhibition and video project THREE MYTHS FOR ATHENS, which took place at the Goethe-Institut-Athen and SMCK Art Space in Athens in May 2026.

AYGO AVGO ART SPACE

AYGO AVGO Art Space is SMCK Magazine’s summer art venue in Leonidio, Arcadia. Since 2015, AYGO AVGO has presented contemporary arts and crafts in dialogue with local traditions and history. The venue is located in the former residence of Antonios G. Lekos, a mansion he built in 1865. Lekos was the first mayor of Leonidio and a merchant with liberal ideas. Born in Prastos (Peloponnese) during the Greek War of Independence, he lived and traded in Constantinople during the second half of the 19th century.
His son, Michael Lekos, authored the Grammar of the Tsakonian Dialect and Change of Direction. The latter, published in 1926, is a novel promoting antimilitarist, socialist, and ecological ideas.

Loukia Richards, SMCK Magazine’s Editor-In-Chief, is the great-great-granddaughter of Antonios G. Lekos.
