THE SHOW

ARACHNE'S LEGACY celebrates textiles in many forms – tapestry, embroidery, jewelry, object, photographic object, dress – including meta-textile, namely textile as abstraction of an idea or concept or a pretense to define faith, state, or intergenerational unity.

The Greek myth of Arachne reflects how practices found in nature – birds making their nests or spiders weaving their webs – fueled human inventiveness while underlining the bonds between all creatures. The myth also distinguishes profane from sacred textiles and emphasizes archaic concepts, such as the hubris of profaning divine materials, or political ones, such as defiance of gods and authority.

The participating artists further explore the question: What is the legacy of the mortals – men and women – who internalized and eternalized the values of their societies by stylizing their intricate textile motifs and sophisticated techniques, in a world ravaged by conflict, egotism, madness, and greed?

The exhibition presents artists from Greece, Germany, Serbia, Sweden, Taiwan, Norway, China, USA, Ukraine, Austria, New Zealand and France working across the fields of art, design, crafts, photography, and fashion. Through their practice, participants create, use or redefine textiles as a medium, while addressing dominant gender and authority narratives. Their works strengthen interdisciplinary dialogue and encourage the viewer to reflect on the universal traits of the human condition.
