Online workshop dates: 19 + 20 and 26 + 27 October 2024
Until quite recently the following sentences pictured the jewelry artist's reality:
• Artists make art and galleries sell it.
• Artists get grants to support their practice and institutions collect their work.
• Artists pay low studio rentals and find teaching jobs easily.
• Artists show their work in fairs and weeks and customers buy their art without gallery representation.
The decrease in assignments, sales, funding opportunities, many jewelry artists experience, make them wonder if they do something wrong. Not rarely, artists ask themselves what happened to the market and their customers.
Lack of information, fear of exposure and rejection, peer pressure, but also a negative attitude towards earning money block the vision of many jewelry artists who are not trained to navigate the extremely difficult present situation dominated by major political, ideological, economic, military conflicts.
Contemporary jewelers who wish to flourish will have to learn managerial and communication skills, to read and understand the news, to value and to protect their assets, to evaluate their investments, and to plan their future based on solid facts.
It will get tougher out there for the ones who refuse to change, and the sooner one realizes it, the more time he/she has to embrace and initiate change. Only realistic strategies and excellent knowledge of the sector, and the opportunities that arise in synergies will help jewelry artists draft their own survival plan.
Success requires hard work and a mental shift, however the results will be most empowering and rewarding.
